Milwaukee, WI – On Friday, March 23, 2018 the National Urban Association for Debate Leagues selected Milwaukee Debate League debater Daniel Montalvo as the National Urban Debater of the Year. Montalvo, a senior at Ronald Wilson Reagan College Preparatory High School, was one of eight finalists for the award out of the more than 11,000 student debaters in the 679 participating schools across 22 different urban debate leagues.

Montalvo was selected based upon his commitment and dedication to debate, academic excellence, and leadership in his school, urban debate league, and community. According to Montalvo, the annual debate resolutions “allow me to explore areas of political interest that help me become a more engaged citizen.” Montalvo’s success and accomplishments are a true testament to the benefits of debate.

Montalvo and his debate partner, Reagan HS junior Benjamin Michael, are automatically qualified to debate at the 2018 Urban Debate National Championship Tournament in Washington D.C. from April 19- 22, 2018. Montalvo will deliver the keynote address at the annual dinner preceding the tournament. Montalvo will be joined by fellow qualifying MDL debaters Idalia Rosas, Hayat Ibrahim, Dylan Riggs, and Samia Sheikh.
